Perhaps, my biggest misfortune for the last decade is that I chose the ICTR fellowship among other fellowships or that I had Dr. Luana Colloca as the fellowship commander. It turned out that I did not do research activities for the 2 years and that she or the ICTR entirely stopped my academic journey.
Every conflict originated from breach of contract by one party. Just for the 250-word report to submit to NIH/NCATS, it was quite regrettable that my requests for switching the lab and having a secondary advisor which was continued over half of a year were nullified with returning words by Dr. Colloca "You should work with Dr. Li-Qun Zhang (research advisor) only to complete the ICTR program". It is quite impressive that though Dr. Colloca already recognized that Dr. Zhang was deceitful and retaliative, and attempted data falsification, she persistently forced me to work with him on publications just to achieve the requirement.
Though it was not mandatory for me to apply for a grant with Dr. Zhang, Dr. Colloca persistently pursued it with threatening words, leading to substantial antagonism between involved persons. Despite my several requests for her to not intervene between Dr. Zhang and me, her interventions with a double standard totally broke up the relationship between us and eventually led to a battle field. I wonder for whom she did such a thing on her own. I bet it was just for the 250-word report to submit to NIH/NCATS.
Dr. Colloca continuously reminded me that I should appreciate that she helped me. I really appreciate her help with my grant proposal preparation. However, it is problematic that she prioticized what she or the ICTR would get from the help, rather than my genuine success. Her words in the form of gaslighting returned: "You should apply with Dr. Zhang only to complete the ICTR program", "As we helped you, you should do what we want", After my termination by the department due primarily to the antagonism between Dr. Zhang and me, she said "Please stop protests against Dr. Zhang. The Dean is very supportive for the ICTR (You just leave the school with the Master's degree)". She contacted to suppress me every time I did something against unjust situation. She said "You should thank me as I became your new advisor for the remaining period". If the department had not terminated me, she would have kept putting her full effort to enslave me to Dr. Zhang to the end of the contract. I was impressed that the young person was deeply loyal to the ICTR and the hierarchical structure, though my life went down to the ground.
This affair might result from a novice fellowship mentor who got the power for the first time and wanted to use it in an abusive manner or from a person who was blinded by a record or success. I am not sure whether all the decisions were eventually by you or Dr. Colloca. But the thing is that the ICTR breached the contract and forced me to create publications regardless of whether it met research integrity. Here I would like to politely request for Dr. Colloca's resignation from the position of the ICTR director. It is for the well-being of other awardees as well as the responsibility for my unjust situation. I truly hope we will not get into the phase of a report to the NIH and a legal issue.
The reason that I reveal this message in public is that I would like to politely remind Dr. Colloca that it is not a good disciplining way to admonish a person in public, regardless of whether s/he is of lower or higher rank. It could be very dangerous if the information to admonish is biased or wrong. Her dogmatic leadership demolished one's life.
