The Li Research Group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston (UH) is seeking highly motivated PhD students to join our growing team in 2025. Our group designs cutting-edge technologies at the interface of humans and machines, advancing the future of healthcare through integrated bioelectronics, implantable systems, and intelligent devices. Our mission is to develop next-generation wearable and implantable systems that can monitor, restore, or even enhance human function — helping patients with chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and mobility challenges. The current research topics include,

· Wireless, battery-free bioelectronics
· Soft implantable medical devices
· Biomedical instrumentation and systems
· Flexible neural interfaces
· Bioelectronic medicine & neurotechnology

PhD position: We have 2-3 fully funded PhD positions! All PhD positions are fully funded by NIH-supported research grants, including tuition, stipend, and healthcare. Students will work closely with clinicians, surgeons, and medical scientists at the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the world’s largest medical ecosystem, gaining valuable exposure to clinical needs and translation pathways. Perspective PhD students with educational background mentioned below are very welcome to inquire potential positions by directly reaching out to Prof. Li (zli65@central.uh.edu). We invite applicants from diverse engineering and science backgrounds. Priority consideration will be given to students with knowledge in:

Electrical Engineering (Circuit design, Device fabrication, Flexible electronics, Optoelectronics, Solid state electronics, AI and intelligent systems)
Mechanical Engineering (Design and Manufacturing, Micro-/Nano fabrication, MEMS and Nanotechnology, etc.)
Material Sciences/Chemistry (Soft materials, Smart active materials, electronic materials, Biomaterials, etc.)
Applied Mechanics/Biomechanics (Fluid mechanics, Solid mechanics, Biomechanics, Fluid-structure interaction)
Why Houston and UH? Living and working in Houston offers an ideal blend of vibrant innovation and life-balance: as the fourth largest city in the U.S., Houston is home to the globally renowned Texas Medical Center (TMC) and is a major hub for healthcare, energy, and technology. The University of Houston is located in a park-like campus a few minutes from downtown Houston with over 37,000 undergraduate students and 8,000 graduate students. The University of Houston has seen tremendous momentum in recent years (https://www.uh.edu/50-in-5), and the College of Engineering is on its path to be Top 50 in the U.S. (https://www.egr.uh.edu/parameters/2021-fall/celebrating-80-years-looking-forward). Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. It is the “energy capital of the world” and houses the largest medical center in the world. The greater Houston area offers state-of-the-art recreational facilities, world-class arts and cultural activities, excellent schools, and affordable housing.

About the PI: Dr. Zhengwei Li is currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Presidential Frontier Faculty Fellow at the University of Houston. He leads an interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of advanced bioelectronics, soft implantable systems, and human–machine interfaces, with the goal of improving diagnostics, therapeutic interventions, and patient care. Prior to joining UH, Dr. Li completed postdoctoral training at Northwestern University with Prof. John A. Rogers, a world leader in bioelectronics, at the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics (QSIB). He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. His impactful research has been published in leading journals including PNAS, Science Robotics, Nature Electronics, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Nature Protocols, Science Robotics, and Advanced Materials, and he has earned recognition such as the NIH Trailblazer Award and the UH Cullen College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award.
